Spring brings so much to be excited about and grateful for, but it can also bring allergens and sinus congestion. It’s easy to take our sinuses for granted when we’re healthy and things are going well, but when inflammation strikes, it disrupts our breathing, sense of smell and taste, pressure in our head, and even the sound of our voice. Luckily, there are some simple things that we can do as part of our self care routine to keep the sinuses open and air flowing freely.
If you are prone to sinus congestion as a result of allergies or know you are regularly exposed to allergens (pet dander, dust, pollen, ect.), I highly recommend flushing your sinuses daily either with a Neti pot or sinus rinse bottle. Be sure to use distilled or clean, boiled water and nasal saline at the correct ratio. The best way to alleviate inflammation in the sinuses is to remove the allergens creating the issue, and using one of these tools is the best way to do that. I have found great relief by using the NeilMed Sinus Rinse – https://shop.neilmed.com/collections/sinus-rinse, especially on days when I’m mowing or messing with hay in the barn.
There are also acupoints that can be very helpful in encouraging drainage of the sinuses, as well as some lymphatic drainage dry brushing techniques. Here is a link to a video demonstration for the acupoints related to clearing the sinuses – https://youtu.be/ezbhszGbr2M
